The exhibition “Fashion inthe mirror of history. 19-20 Century.” has opened in Museum of Moscow. There are shown exhibits from the Museum of Moscow funds and private collection of the amazing fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev.

After visiting the exhibition it came to me how wonderful it would have been to live in the high society of the 19^th century. Ladies of those times wore unusually light and beautiful gowns and accessories. I was amazed by riticules, completely beads embroidered.

Entering one room after another and seeing fashion creations, a thought was fallowing me – how much time and human forces were spent on making so beautiful dresses and accessories. Indeed, in the 19^th century each dress was unique.

In those times, there were no clothes manufacturing plants all across China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Pakistan, where people are paid 10$ a month, those unexistent plants did not pollute environment in such a way, that in Chine a number of people ill with cancer has risen. Sure, in the 19^th century there were lot’s of shortcomings in society- not everyone in those times could afford some of the exhibited gowns, and hungry seamstresses lived too. The ball gowns sometimes were so light, that overheated girls after the dances came out into the garden to breathe some fresh air and caught pneumonia. Despite all this, the 19^th century gowns still “live”.

It is curious, whether the tired seamstress who was paid awfully, had ever wondered that the result of her toil will be exhibited at the museum in the 21^stcentury?

Being surrounded with the historical gowns you start feeling that you are one of those living in the 19^th century. But you can’t completely immerse into this fairy tale because you keep feeling awkward for your skirt being too short, that instead of diadem-comb on your head you have a rubber band, instead of hand-held fan and riticule, there is a big leather bag on your arm, and most uncomfortably you feel after seeing posy holder and realizing that before you have never heard about it.

At the exhibition the visitors, most of them were ladies of course, asked each other questions while looking at the gowns: Where does Alexander Vasiliev keep all these things? I can’t believe that the 19^th century women were so tiny in waist and in height.

I wish there were more pieces for men. Only one black tuxedo was shown. It would be great to have a look at the 19^th century clothes of hussars and dandies. Though, for the hussars clothes you can visit the State Historical Museum.

I’m very grateful to the exhibition organizers and to Alexander Vasiliev for letting us have a look at things that might never be made in the history of fashion. Thank you, Alexander Vasiliev for allowing the visitors to take photos. Thanks to his decision I am able to share with you guys, who has no possibility to visit the exhibition but would love to? And perhaps these pictures would inspire some of you to visit it.

Выставка одежды 19-20 вв

В музее Москвы открылась выставка «Мода в зеркале истории 19-20вв.» Представлены экспонаты из фондов Музея Москвы и коллекции потрясающего историка моды Александра Васильева.

Посетив выставку, я поняла, как прекрасно было бы жить в 19 веке в высшем свете. У дам того времени были необычайной легкости и красоты платья и аксессуары. Меня удивили ридикюли, полностью вышитые бисером. Попадая из одного зала в другой и видя модные творения, меня преследовала мысль - сколько же времени и человеческих сил было потрачено на создание платья такой красоты. И ведь в 19 веке каждое платье было уникальным.

Тогда не было фабрик в Китае, Индонезии, Камбодже, Пакистане, на которых людям платится зарплата в 10 долларов в месяц, и эти фабрики не загрязняли бы окружающую среду настолько, что в Китае в последнее десятилетие увеличился процент больных раком. Конечно же, в 19 веке было полно минусов в жизни общества: представленную одежду на выставке не каждый мог себе позволить, голодающие швеи тоже были. А бальные платья, порой были настолько легкие, что разгоряченные девушки после бальных танцев выходили в сад подышать свежим воздухом и, бывало, подхватывали воспаление легких. Несмотря на все это, платья 19 века до сих пор «живут».

Интересно, задумывалась ли изнуренная работой швея того времени, что ее творение будет выставлено в музее в 21 веке?

Находясь в окружении старинных платьев, появляется ощущение, что ты один из жителей 19 века, вот только чувство неловкости не дает тебе полностью погрузиться в эту сказку. А неловкость испытываешь за то, что твоя юбка слишком коротка, что вместо гребня-диадемы у тебя на голове простая резинка для волос, вместо ридикюля и веера и у тебя в руке большая кожаная сумка, и становится крайне неловко, впервые увидев портбукет, понять, что раньше не знал о существовании этой вещи.

На выставке посетителей, конечно же дам было больше, чем представителей сильного пола, интересовали вопросы: где же Александр Васильев хранит все экспонаты, неужели у женщин того времени были настолько узкие талии и маленький рост.

Жаль, что на выставке был представлен только один мужской наряд - черный смокинг. Было бы все таки интересно посмотреть на обмундирование гусаров и наряды денди той эпохи. Хотя, за гусарскими нарядами можно пойти в Исторический музей.

Я очень благодарна организаторам выставки и Александру Васильеву, что позволили нам взглянуть на вещи, которых в истории моды, видимо, никогда больше не будет сделано. И огромное спасибо Александру Васильеву за то, что разрешил фотосъемку. Благодаря его решению, я могу поделиться с теми, кто не сможет посетить эту выставку, но очень хотел бы, а возможно, фотографии кого-то вдохновят пойти.
